The Student SID program trains interested high school students how to be their school’s SID. It is designed to provide athletics directors and coaches assistance in fulfilling many of the promotional activities that they don’t have time to perform, or the skills to perform. In turn, it also provides students an opportunity to explore a possible career path involving athletics.
Students learn how to cover their teams athletics contests, handle routine contacts with opposing teams, send out information to media representatives, and how to maintain a department’s website or other online programs, such as Varsity Bound. The program shows how technology, academics and athletics come together.
Surrounding collegiate SIDs may talk about the profession, local media representatives discuss the role SIDs should play, and training can be provided in various duties.
Program participants receive handouts explaining how to promote an athletics program, how to work with the media and how to develop and implement a media operations plan. A directory of local media contacts may be provided along with individual outlet deadlines. Student SIDs receive an official pass (with approval from the athletics director) providing them access to all of their school’s contests, and interaction with coaches, student-athletes and media representatives, in order to be able to perform their tasks.
Athletics directors might consider giving class credit or extra credit through a journalism or English class to student participants. Require them to attend at least one contest per week where they can earn credit and if beyond the school day (when most contests are held), students could receive community credit. The program is a great addition to college applications.
